So now I am deep into the research part of my trip planning. It has taught me a lot and I am still learning. I decided to put these things down in a post.
1. We are cheap people.
The real reason we booked our tickets to Colombo is because GoIbibo was giving a flat 3000/- off on any return international flight. For Sri Lanka that’s almost 40% of airfare. Further details of Hacking the trip in some later posts.
2. We are not visiting majority of Heritage sites
Sri Lanka is known for heritage cities and when I started planning they were high on my list. Today we are planning to visit only 3 of the 8 world heritage sites of Sri Lanka. Reason for this is the extraordinary high entree fee for all these sites. The total per person comes out to be more than what we have paid of our return flights combined.
3.Online may or may not be the best way
We always book way in advance and rarely leave any thing to chance. Usually it turns out great and the only time we did not book a place we had nowhere to stay and came back home the same night. Internet has been our trusted aide but this time when I am looking for far cheaper places they are no where except a mention here or there. We do have a few places shortlisted but this time we may just land there without all stays booked.
4. Couch-surfing really works.
I had always thought it was a myth but this time we have a couch (actually a bed) to crash on for our first two days in the country. This has really given us peace of mind.
5. Always Blog
While looking for information I landed upon this blog and it was like a mine of information filled with cheap stays local food and local transport. It is actually like playing it forward. No guidebook tells you the realities the way a real experience does. Forget about all the finer things about blogging and remember it is about playing it forward.
Do you have some things that your trip research has taught you.
